Our study paves the way for discovery of emergent phenomena arising from the combined influence of strong correlation and topology in semiconductor moiré materials. Contrary to most known topological phase transitions 13, it is not accompanied by a bulk charge gap closure. The electric-field-induced topological phase transition from a Mott insulator to a quantum anomalous Hall insulator precedes an insulator-to-metal transition. ![]() At half band filling, corresponding to one particle per moiré unit cell, we observe quantized Hall resistance, h/ e 2 (with h and e denoting the Planck’s constant and electron charge, respectively), and vanishing longitudinal resistance at zero magnetic field. Unlike in the AA-stacked heterobilayers 11, an out-of-plane electric field not only controls the bandwidth but also the band topology by intertwining moiré bands centred at different layers. Here we report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall effect in AB-stacked MoTe 2 /WSe 2 moiré heterobilayers. ![]() However, non-trivial band topology has remained unclear. Correlation-driven phenomena, including the Mott insulator 2, 3, 4, 5, generalized Wigner crystals 2, 6, 9, stripe phases 10 and continuous Mott transition 11, 12, have been demonstrated. ![]() The legacy of anyone who turns to Jesus Christ is the legacy of the power of the cross of Christ. Even when such a confession comes after one has lived an entire life of willful disobedience to God's law, some consequences will naturally follow, but the legacy will not be of sin. A person who has lived in sin all their lives can have a powerful influence on the next generation by the confession of faith in Jesus Christ. We should also recognize our need of a Savior and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. This reality should stir us to fidelity to God’s word. One cannot live in violation of God’s commandments and expect those closest to him to experience no effect from his sin. It is a serious matter, indeed, to have one's life characterized by the violation of God's laws. The phrase, “the sins of the father," as they occur in the Decalogue in Exodus and Deuteronomy remind us that God's law has been established with blessings, as well as judgment. There are three responses we might have from the Scriptures that are given. It is important to remember these overlapping doctrinal truths, and to compare Scripture with Scripture as we think about this passage in its meaning. Conversely, one who has been redeemed from sin by the grace of God in His Son our Savior Jesus Christ has the opportunity to choose what is good and what is right. One whose disposition is sinful will, quite naturally, follow the “north star” of such a nature. We are moral beings given choices to make. But God grants free agency to his creatures. There is nothing that is outside of his sovereign will. God is completely free to govern his universe. Such a view of God and His universe has nothing to do with the doctrine of predestination or the sovereignty of God. God is just and righteous in all of his ways. God does not will suffering upon human beings. Some might even be led to think that a philosophy of determinism is evident in the Bible. The phrase, unexamined, has led some to foolishly charge the Almighty with a capricious nature. Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice: "The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children." Horace, Odes: "For the sins of your fathers you, though guiltless, must suffer." 485-406 B.C.) Phrixus: "The gods visit the sins of the fathers upon the children." ![]() For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, and doing mercy to thousands of those who love Me and keep My commandments” ( Deuteronomy 5:9-10)Įuripides (c. “You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them. “The Lord is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation” ( Numbers 14:18). “You shall not bow down to them or worship them for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me” ( Exodus 20:5). One thinks of abuse, alcoholism, and other sins of personal assault, violations of the image of God in the human being. Moreover, certain sins carry intergenerational consequences. The children of those who sin do in fact inherit the seed of sin and the sin nature. But the phrase is also a concept that is observed sin does have consequences. So, the phrase is linked to the keeping of the commandments and the consequences of sin passing through the generations. The phrase also appears in the book of Numbers and in Jeremiah. ![]() The phrase, "sins of the fathers" appears in the Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy and Exodus. Where the Bible Mentions "Sins of the Father" The phrase itself and the concept of the consequences of sin passing from one generation to another are found throughout English literature, film, and even popular music. But “sins of the father” also appears in select works of antiquity. The phrase, “the sins of the father,” is of Biblical origin. Blair is the author of The Logic of Accidental Nuclear War and a former Minuteman launch officer. In the last case, the military knew that a worldwide hike to DEFCON 3 was not well suited as a response to terrorists using hijacked airliners, but according to Bruce Blair of Princeton University, in the first uncertain hours, authorities seized on it as the quickest way to secure the perimeters of U.S. alert aimed at discouraging direct Soviet participation in the Arab-Israeli war in the Mideast (October 1973) and a hasty move to raise security around military bases after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Only four world-class DEFCON hikes are known: a very brief one caused by a Soviet-American diplomatic breakdown during talks in Paris (May 1960) the Cuban Missile Crisis (October to November 1962) a U.S. At least a dozen alerts have been called for limited geographic areas since 1959, some of them imposed by commanders for individual units. Real DEFCON alerts, as opposed to the ones in movies, don’t have to directly involve U.S. What about their families? Kennedy press secretary Pierre Salinger received an envelope on October 27, 1962, the height of the crisis: If his wife discovered that Salinger had gone into hiding, she was to rip it open for instructions on how to slip out of the city and join up later. High officials got pink cards authorizing helicopter seats, specifying time and location. (That would have happened immediately under DEFCON 2, to be triggered if the United States moved to invade Cuba to disable the Soviet missiles there.) Preparations to flee started under DEFCON 3. ![]() White House staff on duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis later recounted plans to evacuate them from Washington by helicopter. But as the levels get more urgent-certainly by DEFCON 2 and 1-Americans would notice unusual activity on the streets. The General Dynamics F-111 participated in the worldwide 1973 DEFCON alert, as well as the limited 1976 incident in Korea.ĭEFCON levels are primarily for the military. The idea of a graded scale indicating combat readiness goes back at least to World War I, but it wasn’t until 1959, following communication mixups during a joint military air-defense exercise called Top Hand, that the United States and Canada agreed to five “defense conditions,” or DEFCONs. Hiking the DEFCON level activates a stack of scripted plans intended for quick execution, and is comparable to “Battle stations!” on a warship facing combat. DEFCON 5 is peacetime, while DEFCON 1 is imminent war. What’s “high”? Screenwriters often get the scale wrong, so begin with this fact: the lower the number, the higher the worry. A high DEFCON level is now techno-slang for a situation so pressing that it needs prompt, extreme action. Going to the international hackers convention? That’s a DEF CON. The term shows up in TV shows and movies, video games, cartoons, songs, and even hot-sauce labels. It’s embarrassing, perhaps, but not that surprising-this concept from the depths of the cold war still has so much popular fascination it has blurred under constant use. According to Robert Ruby, a newspaper reporter embedded on the ship, one officer grabbed a spy novel to find out what the alert meant. ![]() The battleship, Bill told them over the loudspeaker, was now at DEFCON 2. There have been numerous flood stories identified from ancient sources scattered around the world. However, some Christians have studied the ideas of creation and the afterlife presented in the Epic. 1, 2 The rest of the Epic, which dates back to possibly third millennium B.C., contains little of value for Christians, since it concerns typical polytheistic myths associated with the pagan peoples of the time. ![]() The Epic of Gilgamesh has been of interest to Christians ever since its discovery in the mid-nineteenth century in the ruins of the great library at Nineveh, with its account of a universal flood with significant parallels to the Flood of Noah's day. ![]() ![]() Often, you’ll encounter brief vignettes of Pikmin up to silly antics in between enemy encounters, tossing in a touch of personality to color the level. Pikmin encourages you to take the time to immerse yourself in your surroundings. There are no complex jumping sections (as Olimar just can’t), nothing moves very quickly, and almost every puzzle you encounter can be solved as you find it, requiring little to no backtracking. He can also throw Pikmin at enemies to fend them off. ![]() Instead, he relies wholly on the Pikmin he finds to perform tasks such as lifting heavy objects, grabbing distant Sparklium deposits, or using their unique, color-coded talents to swim or resist electricity or break rocks. Additionally, he will find hidden artifacts of a long-dead civilization (that should look all-too-familiar) to use for large quantities of what he needs.īeing a small space man with no special talents, Olimar cannot move very quickly, nor jump, or attack enemies on his own. Olimar sets out to obtain enough Sparklium to fuel his ship up and depart for home, but to do so, he must enlist the help of the local Pikmin to traverse the world and find some. Hey! Pikmin sees our buddy Captain Olimar stranded on a new planet that, in a convenient and familiar twist, happens to also house both Pikmin and a host of familiar predators. And while inklings of uniqueness sparkle along the edges, the game never goes far enough with them to distinguish itself in a meaningful way. Pikmin worked just dandy as an RTS, and while it doesn’t make a bad platformer, your insistence on a steady parade of games in the genre dulls the impact of games like Hey!
